Out of all areas of the body, the feet are often the most neglected. This is normally simply an oversight by most people who believe that their feet do not need much attention. The truth is that with a little preventative maintenance most ailments can be avoided altogether.

A human being’s foot is uniquely designed for their body. Feet allow people to walk upright and bear the entire brunt of a person’s weight. These appendages are able to bear the impact shock that happens during everyday running or walking. This causes a tremendous amount of stress on the bones and joints. On top of this, people tend to wear shoes that are meant for style rather than for their original function; to protect the feet. Stylish shoes tend to suffocate feet and squish them into unnatural positions. This is where a lot of foot problems are created.

Common ailments of the feet are ganglion cysts, bunions, corns and arthritis.  Ganglion cysts occur in the tendon sheaths. These cysts are fluid filled soft tissue masses that grow and grow. They will erupt, drain and start the process all over again. A bunion occurs from an excessive amount of pressure being applied to the toes. This is most commonly found on the big toe and happens because of badly fitting shoes. The bunion, itself is an enlarged amount of tissue and bone. This condition was often called “tailor‘s bunion” because those with this occupation sat in such a position for such an extended period of time as to put undue stress on their big toes. Corns are also known as calluses on the feet. It is essentially a build up of skin cells that are dead. This is where there has been a large amount of stress or friction on the tissue or bone of the foot. The body uses calluses to protect itself. Arthritis is often just a matter of age and the amount of time spent on a person’s feet over the years. It happens predominantly in the big toe before any other part of the feet.

A person’s overall health can affect their feet. An example is those that are diabetic. They are prone to foot infections. These lead to red, swollen and feverish toes that often contain fluid and have a foul odor. This requires people with diabetes to be steadfast in their foot care. Diabetic foot infections often lead to amputation of toes or other health problems.

The important thing for people to realize is that foot care in important. As long as preventative measures are taken then it is possible to avoid most, if not all, foot ailments. The foot should be treated just like any other organ of he body and protected with a daily regimen.
